Affiliate Marketing, also known as promotional marketing, is defined as a web marketing practice in which a business organization rewards affiliate partners for each website visitor or customer, which is brought about by the affiliate partner's promotion & marketing efforts through his own website. It is a profit sharing agreement or contract between the owner of a website and an online business organization. In affiliate marketing, either the website owner flashes advertisements of the merchant’s products or services on his website, so as to help the affiliate in selling of those products & services or routs potential customers visiting his site to the merchant's website, in exchange for a share of the revenues.
Affiliate marketing is an integral part of the Internet marketing exercise. It also encompasses other online marketing or web marketing methods to some extent, such as search engine marketing, search engine optimization, e-mail marketing and display advertising. Affiliates also use other online marketing techniques such as putting up favorable reviews of the products or services offered by the online business partner, to promote their sale.
There are three major techniques of affiliate marketing:

Pay Per Click (PPC) - In this affiliate marketing system, whenever an internet visitor or online customer goes to the merchant’s website by clicking the ad or link on the affiliate’s website, a certain amount of money is transferred to the affiliate partner’s account.

Pay Per Sale (PPS) - In this affiliate marketing system, whenever a sale is made as a result of advertising on the affiliate's website, a predetermined percentage of profit is transferred into the affiliate partner’s account.

Pay Per Lead (PPL) - In this affiliate marketing system, whenever a potential customer registers at the merchant's website as a result of the link or ad displayed on the affiliate partner’s website, a fixed amount is transferred into the affiliate partner's account.

Affiliate Marketing - the process of using one website to promote other website for a share of profits - is a mutually beneficial system for both the website owner as well as the online merchant. For the affiliates or the website owners, it’s an easy, convenient and hassle free way to earn money without actually doing hardcore marketing or selling, as it only involves placing an ad on his website. In the case of online merchant, he gains a convenient advertising medium and doesn't need to do hardcore selling or promotion of his products & services.
